SHANG System

The SHANG System is a contemporary furniture system that is rooted in history and culture. The System pairs key visual elements of traditional Chinese furniture with a modular concept, which allows flexibility in combining each component. This flexibility lets one change the function - from a stool to a bedside table and so on, and the appearance according to one’s preferred degree of visual Chinese cultural identity. The flexibility, rootedness in heritage and crafted quality is a furniture system that can be handed down as a heirloom.

Baan

"baan" is a type of cupboard which has been specifically designed for the purpose of dinner usage. It's unique appearance and strength is narrative that is related by function. There are several distinguishing features of cabinet systems. The different functions and features of cupboard that are separated by story such as the Cutlery insert and Box of tissues are represented by fireplace and chimney. Furthermore, wine glasses are represented by the chandelier and dish rack is symbolized by the staircase. There are four main components of house whereby narrative ideas.

Steam

Steam is a stove-top tea maker. It brews tea by passing hot water pressurized by steam through stacked kettles. Reflecting upon tea culture in east, Steam has stacking teapots specially designed for tea preparation. Larger lower kettle is filled with water to boil, and then boiled water evaporates into upper kettle, steeping loose-leaf tea blend rather slowly. When desired amount is collected in upper part, switch on top is turned to stop water transfer. Serving is made using two kettles with poured tea and water to dilute, therefore allowing user to adjust the strength of drink.

The folding chair adopts tilting on chairs as the design principle, the user is actively involved in sitting on it. The two necessary legs of the chair are transformed into two thin panels with their bottom edges touching on the floor as a skid. They are wrapped with a band of fabric, that connects the top edges of the panels to a flexible seat, that automatically nestles to the back contour of the user. This design grants an active and most flexible sitting position, a reduction of its construction and required materials. Not being used it can be collapsed to a thickness of less than 20 mm.

Discovering the true nature of human by his expressive physical figure paintings, Egon Schiele was the true inspiration to find what the best shape to embrace a human body is.
